The Lorne Brooker Show on 800 CJBQ had the chance to speak with the NDP candidate for Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga, Ava Duffy, for its Meet the Candidates segment on Thursday.
Duffy is from Marmora and raises six kids as a stay-at-home mother.
She says she has always been a New Democrat.
“I understand how easy it is for people to go from doing relatively well off to struggling. I grew up with a single mom who was on ODSP, and then I was very blessed to meet my husband, and we have had a wonderful life together, but I’ve always remembered those struggles and how difficult that is,” Duffy explained on The Lorne Brooker Show.
“I remember seeing people who have been, you know, doing really well, and then just stumbling on things… you get hurt at work and all of a sudden now you can’t pay for things, or you get put on disability.”
On the show, Duffy was asked about addressing the issue of a lack of housing.
“The biggest thing that I would like to see is more not-for-profit co-ops, or geared-to-income housing, so that people who are struggling financially are actually able to afford rent,” Duffy explained.
“I’d like to be able to see that corporations can’t buy what are affordable homes that are still on the market, and there’s very few of those affordable homes to begin with. Corporations shouldn’t be able to buy them.”
