Prince Edward County could be facing a vote of no-confidence in Mayor Steve Ferguson in the near future.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, Councillor Corey Englesdorfer announced his intent to trigger a vote of no confidence, saying he would bring official notice of motion to a future meeting.
Councillor Englesdorfer cited ongoing issues with the Wellington water project, and its impact on his local constituents.
“Residents are having to use detour routes that are in the range of 15 to 18 kilometers long,” said Councillor Englesdorfer. “Our local businesses are really suffering because people are just kind of diverting around Wellington and not shopping here at all.”
In an interview with Quinte News, he said that the mayor and council need to communicate better, as residents have been blindsided with changing plans and unscheduled disruptions.
“It’s reaching a boiling point in town, there’s a lot of frustration,” said Councillor Englesdorfer. “Residents aren’t happy, and they just feel like council is not doing anything right now to hear their concerns or try to remedy them.”
The water project in Wellington has been a source of tension in the community. Disruptions to traffic along Wellington Main Street during construction have also caused resident concerns, as road closures came as surprises to those affected, and heavy traffic was redirected onto side roads that were not intended to handle large vehicles.
Councillor Englesdorfer already named his planned seconder for the motion, Councillor Phil Prinzen, but did not have a timeline for when the official notice of motion would be made.
The next planned municipal election is set to be held in October of 2026.
