Saturday afternoon was a time for laughs, tears, hugs, and smiles in Quinte West.
Dozens of people gathered on 2nd Dug Hill Road, at the site of a 2023 hit and run that killed 14-year-old Seryn Lazzaro.
At Quinte West Council next month, a delegation will make a request that 2nd Dug Hill Road (or at least a portion of the road) have a name change to “Seryn’s Way.”
Karen Lazzaro is Seryn’s grandmother and says this has been a labour of love project between her and her friend Diane Lyndon. Lyndon’s granddaughter Sierra was walking with Seryn the night she was struck and killed.
Lazzaro spoke to Quinte News at a gathering on 2nd Dug Hill Road this past weekend.
Audio Player“It’s a way for us to remember her because she was a beautiful person. She was unique in her own way.”
Lazzaro hopes council and the municipality will help to celebrate and honour her granddaughter.
Audio Player“That it would mean a lot to us if they took into consideration her memory, instead of the tragedy that happened here.”

Diane Lyndon is going to be spearheading the delegation to speak to council next month. We asked her about the friendship between the granddaughters.

Audio Player“It’s amazing. All these people coming. I’ve known all these people ever since I was a little girl. It’s amazing seeing them come out and support, ’cause she deserves everything in the world.”
Key spoke fondly of her friend.
Audio Player“She was the best thing on this planet. She was amazing. She was happy. She was funny.”

Cousin Heather Duncan lives in Brighton and said she supports the name change.
Audio Player“Every day I go by here, it brings back the memory of her tragedy of being hit by a car. If the name was changed to Seryn’s Way, it would be a great memory of her. She was a wonderful child.”
Fifty-one-year-old Dean Potter has been charged in connection with the fatal crash investigation and has a court date scheduled for this spring.
