Online mischief has caused a lot of aggravation for the Liberal candidate and his team in Bay of Quinte riding.
In a press release issued late Saturday, candidate Chris Malette says someone or a group has purchased several website addresses featuring his name, addresses like “chrismalette.ca” and ‘votechrismalette.ca.”
People clicking on those websites were directed to Conservative candidate Ryan Williams’s official website.
Malette says he reached out to Williams and his campaign team and was assured that they had nothing to do with the misdirections.
In a public statement, Williams and his campaign denied any involvement with the website redirection, and said they were making a formal complaint to Elections Canada about the issue.
”This is an important election, and it’s crucial that people aren’t misled by these tactics. If you come across any of these fake sites, please report them to Elections Canada
right away so they can take action. We’re committed to running an honest and transparent campaign. Your support and vigilance make a difference-
thanks for standing with us.”
Malette said he hopes those responsible for the mischief do the right thing and direct the addresses to the Liberal website.
His team were able to purchase a domain titled “chrismaletteforquinte.ca” and that is the official campaign website.
