A 42-year-old Belleville man is facing a long list of charges, following a stabbing at Belleville General Hospital on Tuesday
Around 12:20 p.m., city police responded to the Emergency Department, after reports a patient had a knife.
When the suspect attended the hospital, was placed in a non-emergent area on a bed.
When approached by hospital staff, he threatened them.
Security was called and as they attempted to disarm him, both the suspect and a security guard sustained stab wounds to their legs.
The man has been charged with uttering threats, assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and intimidation of a health care professional.
He has been held for a bail hearing.
Quinte Health President and CEO Stacey Daub commented on the incident, before giving her report to the Board of Directors of Quinte Health.
“His (security) calm, quick response in an incredibly volatile situation was commended by everyone present. We are also profoundly grateful to the entire emergency department team for the remarkable professionalism, the courage and the composure they demonstrated, in what you could imagine was a situation of fear and uncertainty,”
“These moments, while rare, highlight just how much is asked of our frontline staff, not only in the terms of clinical skills, but also in the strength of spirit.”
A full internal review is now underway by Quinte Health to identify any further steps that can be taken to strengthen safety measures for their staff, patients and visitors.
