On the day before an expected election call, the federal Liberal government has announced some major infrastructure funding for the City of Belleville.
The federal government is contributing $16,155,576 to the Avonlough Sanitary Pumping Station and Conveyance System project, through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.
The new pumping station is part of a project to create 9000 residential lots in the city’s west end, under the Loyalist West Secondary Plan. The new pumps are needed to provide wastewater service for the new lots.
Property acquisition and detail designs of the project are currently underway, and work is expected to start in the spring.
The total budget for the project is $57,200,000 with over $19 million in funding from the federal government allocated for the project so far.
The latest funding announcement is set to cover 40% of the project’s costs, reducing the need to spend municipal funds.
