East Region OPP are calling on all drivers to help reduce the frequency of fatal accidents on Ontario’s roads.
During 2024, officers from the East Region OPP detachment investigated 72 fatal accidents, which resulted in the deaths of 81 people.
The most common cause of the accidents was speeding, followed by distracted driving, alcohol, and not wearing a seat belt.
So far in 2025, officers have investigated 11 fatal crashes with 13 deaths.
“This is why we are out on the highways looking for those who deliberately choose to drive at dangerously high speeds,” said OPP East Region Commander Lisa Wilhelm. “When we say ‘slow down’ it’s about preventing tragedies. It’s about ensuring moms, dads, sons, daughters, friends and loved ones all get safely to their destinations.”
The OPP are instructing motorists to slow down, never drive impaired, keep your eyes on the road ahead instead of your phone, and always fasten your seatbelt. For motorcycle riders, they are reminding riders to wear a helmet.
They are also reminding the public that if you see someone driving dangerously and feel that lives are at risk, call 911.
