Like all of us, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board is learning on the fly when it comes to artificial intelligence.
Quinte News spoke to Director of Education Katherine MacIver about the board’s new Artificial Intelligence System Guidelines and Implementation Plan. (CLICK HERE FOR REPORT – starting on page 38).
She says this is not something that is coming, it is already here.
“For us right now it’s about thinking through what are the supports and guidelines that our staff need and our students need, in order to use it efficiently and also ethically.”
MacIver adds it has changed how teachers do their jobs.
“When I was in the classroom, we used to have a binder on the shelf and you’d pull it out for your unit on fractions and those days have passed us by. Our teachers in the classroom are constantly reflecting, revising, moving with technology.”

According to the director, it is about support, monitoring, continuous learning, and accountability.
“How is it actually working behind the scenes and is this a reliable tool? Our teachers are used to having reliable tools, reliable sources.”
