With the provincial snap election just a week away, Bay of Quinte MPP and Conservative candidate Tyler Allsopp appeared on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker show to answer questions from area residents.
When questioned about Premier Doug Ford’s decision to call a snap election, MPP Allsopp said that they needed to know the people were behind them in order to effectively handle tariff threats by US President Donald Trump.
“We get our mandate from the people, and that’s why we’ve gone back to the people,” said Alsopp. “I think that it does project confidence. We think that people know that we’re doing a great job, that we’ve managed the economy well, that we continue to be good stewards to taxpayer dollars, and that we’re the party to guide them through this crisis.”
One caller asked Allsopp about how road maintenance is being funded after the province cut vehicle registry fees. He said that the goal was to reduce the burden on struggling Ontarians.
“Since 2018 we’ve also cut a number of fees and taxes, but we’ve significantly grown the budget, because we focus on growing the base, not raising the rates,” said MPP Allsopp. “So when we came into office, the budget was about $160 billion in 2018. We’re now over $212 billion so we’ve been effectively growing the base, making sure that we’re still contributing to infrastructure, health care, all of those priorities, while also lessening the burden on the taxpayer.”
Allsopp also spoke to voters about recent funding for roadwork on Highway 49 and the process to establish a HART hub in Belleville to help with the ongoing homelessness and addictions problems.
