Northumberland OPP were able safely rescue a snowmobiler in distress on Rice Lake Monday evening.
Police, fire and paramedics responded around 7 p.m. after the snowmobiler reported getting stuck in snow and ice on the lake.
OPP officers proceeded on foot near the location where the roads became impassable due to the underlying snow.
The adult male was located near a dock and safely rescued by police.
Police say while, fortunately, this situation ended safely, it serves as an important reminder:
Know the ice conditions – Ice thickness can vary, and no ice is ever 100% safe.
Plan your route – Stick to marked trails and avoid unfamiliar areas.
Never ride alone – If you do, tell someone your route and expected return time.
Carry safety gear – A fully charged phone, ice picks, a rope, and a flotation suit can be lifesavers.
Be prepared for emergencies – If stranded, stay calm and call for help immediately.
