The Town of Bancroft is hoping Hastings County can provide extra funding to keep the homeless
population warmer and safer next winter.

Mayor of Bancroft Paul Jenkins has asked the county to provide emergency shelter throughout the day during especially cold weather.
The current warming centre only provides service during the overnight period.
At a county committee meeting Wednesday,Deputy Warden Tony Fitzgerald of Highland Hastings described the temperature early Wednesday morning in the Bancroft area.

“Towards Bancroft it hit minus 26. That’s the reality. I mean we up north know that, expect that, and we deal with it but for the homeless it’s a very different thing so it’s a very real concern so I think it would be very helpful to the north if we could look at it.”
More discussion on the issue will take place when the county learns what funding it will receive for homelessness next year from the provincial and provincial governments.
