Brighton council has endorsed an effort by Nature Canada to have Lake Ontario be designated as a National Marine Conservation Area.
Monday, council supported a resolution asking that the federal and provincial government commission a feasibility study of having a conservation area established while consulting with municipalities, Indigenous communities, businesses, and residents.
A National Marine Conservation Area would serve to protect the lake’s ecosystems, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.
Fishing may or may not be banned in the areas.
There are currently five National Marine Conservation Areas in Canada and it’s hoped 10 more will be created by 2030.
