One of the candidates running for leadership of the federal Liberal Party is making a visit to the Quinte region.
Karina Gould spoke on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show on Wednesday morning. During her interview she talked about why she’s running for the head of the party.
“I need to do this because my country needs me,” said Gould. “We need somebody who is focused first and foremost on protecting Canadians, protecting their jobs and protecting our economy, and that’s exactly why I am doing this.”
Gould also said she would stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump, and his threats of steep, across-the-board tariffs on Canadian goods.
“If you give a bully your lunch money, they don’t leave you alone,” said Gould. “They come back and they shake you down for more.”
She also took aim at Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, saying that the Conservatives are planning deep cuts to social assistance programs.
“I’ll just pick up on something about Pierre Poilievre being tough. I think that’s a bit of a misnomer. He yaps a lot, but does he actually deliver? Not really,” said Gould. “He talks about bringing back warrior culture, it’s more like a keyboard warrior than anything else. He’s a lot more show than substance, whereas I’m a lot of substance.”
After her morning interview, she went to Quinte West to meet with party members and supporters, in a private event.
Quinte News’s Tim Durkin had the chance to speak with Gould at the event.
