Prince Edward County has made a land trade with a local resident in order to secure ownership of a short stretch of Fairfield Street.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, council voted to approve the trade, giving up a small part of Queen Elizabeth Park, in order to gain ownership of the nearby road.
Over 100 years ago, when the road was first established, it was put in as a public right of way. This means that while the public had the right to use the road, it still sat on private property. While the road can be used as a right of way, the municipality didn’t have the ability to place infrastructure like water or power lines under the road.
Now the city is trading a small part of Queen Elizabeth Park, next to the property the road sits on, for the road area.
With rights to the road area secured, the municipality plans to run water lines in the area in order to eliminate dead ends in the system.
