The City of Quinte West is adding to the capital budget bottom line for 2025.
On Wednesday night, council approved a staff request for more than a half million dollars in additional spending for two projects.
Manager of Water/Wastewater Services Matt Tracey spoke about purchasing chlorine scrubbers for the water treatment plants in Trenton and Frankford.
Emergency Chlorine Gas Scrubbers are used to neutralize chlorine gas from exhaust streams, which can pose a risk to human health. They can also prevent the release of toxic chlorine gas into the environment.
The approved budget for the scrubbers was for $1.45 million.
Meanwhile, staff recommended the purchase of emergency generators for five locations across the municipality
- Frankford Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Sidney Street sewage pumping station
- Louis Street sewage pumping station
- YMCA
- Trent St sewage pumping station
The approved budget for the generators was $1.73 million.
The scrubbers and generators had already been purchased, with $1.448 million budgeted to install them, which was tendered through a joint bid.
In November, Peak Construction came in with the only bid for the project at $2.39 million, nearly $1 million more than budgeted.
After adjustments to project scope, the bid was resubmitted for $1.745 million.
During the meeting Wednesday, council approved taking money from reserves to cover the extra cost above what was budgeted.
