For the first time, Trenton Care and Share Food Bank is hosting a major fundraiser to keep going strong.
Saturday, February 22 will be the first annual Coldest Night of the Year in Quinte West.
The walk will raise funds for the food bank, with an ever increasing need.
Food Bank co-manager Jen Koornneef tells Quinte News the walk happens in over 190 cities across Canada.
“It is in support of organizations that offer services within the realm of hunger, homelessness, or hurt.”
Koorneef says they are joining other local walks including Belleville, Napanee, Port Hope, Cobourg, and Kingston.
She says the Trenton event gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
The hope is to have individuals and teams and businesses get involved at various levels.
“Really hoping that businesses in Quinte West rally around this event. You can support the event in several different ways. Organizing your own team, or there’s also an opportunity to be a sponsor of the event.”
The goal for the first year in Trenton is to raise $20,000, from 150 walkers and 20 teams.
She says demand for the food bank has skyrocketed.
“We experienced a 23 per cent increase last year over 2023, a 68 per cent increase over 2022.”
Koornneeff says that, combined with a massive increase in the price of food, makes for the perfect storm of need.
