A longtime business in downtown Belleville is closing its doors.
In a Facebook post this week, Stacey Kerr and Stuart Long, the owners of Scalliwag Toys at 302 Front Street, said the store will close for good at the end of the month.
They said while it was not an easy decision to make, their lease ends January 31 and they have decided not to renew or relocate.
In the post they said, “There are a lot of challenges when running a small business, and when all of those challenges get thrown at you at once with only half of them being in your power to change or overcome, it chips away at you in every way imaginable.”
They also noted that supply chain issues and and other factors have reinforced their decision to close.
Scalliwag’s has been a staple in Belleville for 40 years.
Kerr and Long took over the business from original owners Richard and Karin Belanger in 2020 just a few weeks before the pandemic lockdowns began.
Kerr and Long thanked everyone for their support over the last few years and said they are planning to maintain elements of their online and community activities.
