As part of our series looking back on 2024, Northumberland Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence says his riding is no different than other parts of the country.
The overwhelming commentary from his constituents is that the cost of living continues to burden people.
“People are really challenged to get by, even people who are earning what has traditionally been a very good income are having a challenge because a dollar just doesn’t go as long as it used to and so folks are looking for a long-term vision and one that enables our economy and country to thrive and really to allow Canadians to achieve their full potential.”
Lawrence says he was happy to connect with constituents throughout his riding this year as he attended several community events.
And despite tough economic times, people continue to persevere.
“I’m always amazed at how vibrant, how enthusiastic, how hard-working, how charitable our communities are. Business owners continue to work incredibly hard even with the headwinds of a sluggish economy. Our workers are the best in the world here in Northumberland and continue to work extremely hard.”
Among the major projects he was happy to see completed in his riding in 2024 was the Sunny Life Recreation & Wellness Centre in Campbellford.
The 66,000 square foot facility on Seymour Quarry Road, is a partnership between Trent Hills and YMCA Northumberland.
The $21 million centre, which opened a few weeks ago, was funded in part by a $7.5 million grant from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
