The Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services has put out its 12 safety tips for a fire-safe December.
They include the following:
- Water real trees daily.
- Check that all decorative lights are in proper working order before installation.
- Ensure you have working smoke alarms on all floors and outside all sleeping areas.
- Test your carbon monoxide alarms.
- Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs.
- Extension cords should only be used temporarily. Never overload extension cords or power bars.
- Give space heaters space – keep heaters away from decorations and furniture.
- Extinguish candles before you leave the room. When you go out, blow out!
- Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
- Watch what you heat – do not leave cooking or pots unattended on the stove.
- Encourage smokers to smoke outside and extinguish smoking articles safely.
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.
