Prince Edward County has issued a posthumous Civic Recognition Certificate to a county resident who lost his life saving his nephew from a dangerous current.
James Badgley was honoured during Tuesday’s council meeting. Mayor Steve Ferguson said that his actions were inspiring.
“His final heroic act, diving in the treacherous waters to say this nephew, exemplified his unwavering courage and selflessness,” said Mayor Ferguson. “We honour James’ memory and recognize his extraordinary courage and dedication.”
Badgley lost his life at Point Petre, on August 4th. He was 35 years old. He and his family had been swimming in the area around Point Petre when he saw his young nephew in distress and battling a bad undertow. After leaping into the water, Badgley guided his nephew towards the shore and out of the current before he was pulled under and did not resurface.
This isn’t the first time Badgley was recognized for bravery, he was awarded a Medal of Bravery in 2017 for saving a man from a burning home in Belleville in 2015.
Mayor Ferguson presented the certificate to Badgley’s family, who attended the meeting.
