Despite opposition from residents, Prince Edward County’s Planning and Development Committee has recommended council approve an Official Plan Amendment and rezoning allowing a big new housing development near Delhi Park in Picton.
The development includes six townhouses, two semi-detached residences, and a tiered apartment building with 98 units on two hectares of land.
Fifty-three of the building’s apartments will be affordable and there would also be six supportive housing units.
Several residents said the development wouldn’t fit in the older neighbourhood consisting of single family homes and that it would ruin the public’s enjoyment of Delhi Park.
There were also concerns about streets and drainage from the property.
However, most of the committee agreed with the sentiment expressed by Councillor Phil St Jean.
“Every opportunity where we can provide affordable rental housing in this community we have to. Everything about this is exactly what we should be doing in this community.”
St Jean added that there was only a 0.2 per cent vacancy rate for rental units in the county.
Only Councillor Roy Pennell voted against the development.
