Prince Edward County OPP are reminding the public to be cautious online as it receives reports of an online extortion scam.
Over the past few weeks, OPP has received reports of victims receiving emails containing their personal information, along with claims of possessing inappropriate videos and images.
The scammer then demands $2000 in cryptocurrency, threatening to release the images and videos if the money is not received.
Police are asking the public to follow these tips to avoid falling victim to fraud:
- Pump the brakes and ask more questions
- Ask for credentials
- Listen to the inner voice that says “this doesn’t sound right”
- Be weary of any request for cash or cryptocurrency
- Be cautious of the sense of urgency
- Do not be rushed into sending money
