The Showcase involved 22, U16 teams from the OMHA East and West divisions plus the NOHA with each team playing twice at the Rickard Rec Complex in Bowmanville. The event ran from Friday through Sunday.
The West group’s second-place Hurricanes entered Saturday’s contest against Quinte with the OMHA’s second-best record at 10-and-2 while the 5-2-2-and-1 Red Devils came in sitting three points out of first place in the East. On paper, Halton was slightly favoured but it was the Devils who jumped into the driver’s seat early, holding period leads of 1-0 and 3-2 before the Hurricanes stormed back to outscore Quinte 3-1 in the third.
Nate Rashotte broke the ice late in the first period with an unassisted tally then Ryan Foley’s unassisted goal on a breakaway, while Quinte was shorthanded, gave the Devils a 2-0 lead under a minute into the second. After Nick Colson’s goal put them ahead 3-1 in the middle set, Cole Rowat scored with 1:51 remaining in the third to knot it 4-4, just 34 seconds before Halton retook the lead to steal the win. Chase Cybulskie, Ty Leavitt and Colson had assists for Quinte while Ayden Mullen saw duty between the posts.
On Friday against NOHA Team White Lily Reid played an excellent game in goal, turning back everything thrown her way as she backstopped Quinte to the 5-0 victory. The Red Devils dominated from the get-go, turning a 1-0 first-period lead into a commanding 4-0 advantage with three more goals in the second set before adding one more in the third.
Rashotte got things rolling once more, scoring unassisted midway through the opening period with his goal holding up as the eventual winner. The Devils made it 3-0 early in the second when Blake Munnings and Rashotte netted short-handed, unassisted markers just over a minute apart ahead of Cole Coughlan’s goal later in the period. Wyatt Whalen assisted on the Coughlan goal while Jake Gawley and Ryan Foley picked up assists when Rowat notched one in the third period.

The Gillespie’s Tree Service U15 Red Devils squad took a break from league play this weekend to travel North and participate in the Myers Automotive Shootout.
Things kicked off on Friday with a contest against the hometown Ottawa Jr 67s in a battle of special teams. Quinte got the ball rolling with a power play goal from Austin Preston with assists going to Andrew Laurin and Trent Clow and Laurin chipped in a short handed marker off a nice outlet from Noah Kennedy as well to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Ottawa answered back with a power play goal before Lawson Minifie added yet another power play marker. The 67s would add one more power play goal before the end off the first to make it a 3-2 Quinte lead at the break. The 67s tied it up at 3 early in the 2nd before Ewan Dahle scored off a feed from Laurin and Preston to give the Red Devils a 4-3 lead at the break. Lauchlan Whelan got on the scoresheet early in the 3rd tallying the first even strength goal for either team in the game with assists going to Laurin and Jax Martin. Jack Beebe added one from the point as well off a pass from Whelan before a very bizarre own goal by the 67s (credited to Coen Lowry) on a delayed penalty call allowed the Red Devils to take a 7-3 lead. Some late penalty trouble allowed the 67s to pot 2 goals but their comeback came up short and Quinte came out on top in game 1 by a score of 7-5. Rory Young picked up the win in net. Game 2 saw a spirited contest with a physical side in the Waterloo Wolves. Waterloo jumped out to an early lead before Ewan Dahle could answer back off passes from Trent Clow and Cohen Stewart and tie the game up through the first period. Clow added a marker of his own on a nice passing play with Lawson Minfie and Dahle to allow QRD to take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd intermission. Quinte would add 2 more in the 3rd with Andrew Laurin finding the back of the net with helpers going to Lauchlan Whelan and Jax Martin and Clow sealing the deal into an empty net for a 4-1 win and a perfect record after day 1. Nathan Ferriss picked the win in this contest. Saturday morning the team met with the Ottawa Valley Titans in game 3 of the weekend. Andrew Laurin got the scoring started early in the first period with assists going to Lauchlan Whelan and Jack Beebe. Laurin added his second of the game from Jax Martin and Whelan to bring home a 4-1 win and an undefeated record and a first pace decider with the Don Mills Flyers in game 4. The squad gave Don Mills all they could handle but ultimately came up on the short end of a 2-0 game. This set up an evening quarter final with the Upper Canada Cyclones. After several lengthy delays sadly the offence remained dry and the team bowed out in the quarters.
