A Kingston man has been charged after allegedly flying a drone into Warkworth Institution to smuggle drugs and contraband to an inmate.
Kingston police began an investigation in September resulting in the arrest of a 36-year-old man on October 24.
He was apprehended with the help of Northumberland OPP in a vehicle near the Campbellford area prison, allegedly in possession of a package that was prepared for delivery, along with evidence of previous drone drops.
The accused, who has not been identified, faces charges of an act likely to cause mischief endangering life, dangerous operation of a conveyance (drone) and two counts of breach of release order.
The contents of the packages included 180 grams of cannabis, 57 grams of cannabis shatter, 24 mini cell phones and 1000 grams of tobacco.
The approximate institutional value of the package is $200,000.
Meanwhile, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) issued its own release regarding the seizure of contraband and unauthorized items from Warkworth Institution.
CSC reports several packages were seized at the medium security facility between October 12 and 29.
Items seized included marijuana, tobacco, drug paraphernalia along with cell phones and accessories.
The total estimated institutional value of the seizures is $516,095.
