The Quinte Homebuilders’ Association (QHBA) is calling on people in the local construction industry and in the general public to show up at a Quinte West Council budget meeting later today (Wednesday) to protest proposed development charge increases.
In a press release the Association says the over 150% increase to $37,000 on an urban single family home would seriously affect housing affordability in the region.
Chair of the Homebuilders’ Association Jon Van Huizen says such a huge increase would have “far-reaching consequences for the local construction industry and homebuyers.”
Other local municipalities are also considering steep increases for development charges.
The Association maintains some of its questions regarding the background studies leading to conclusions about development charges have not been answered and there could be legal implications involved. The QHBA has not ruled out an appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal should council approve the proposed increase as it now stands.
Quinte West council’s first budget meeting begins at 4 p.m. today.
