Northumberland OPP are reporting a number of unrelated traffic incidents in the area over the weekend.
On Friday at around 5:20 p.m., officers spotted a motorist on Verona Street in Cobourg who was known to be prohibited from driving and wanted on a warrant.
The driver was stopped by police and the person was arrested.
Forty-one-year-old William Budd of the Township of Alnwick-Haldimand was charged with operation while prohibited.
He was held for bail and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
On Saturday, just before 5:30 p.m., OPP and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on private property in the area of Lakehurst Street in Brighton.
When officers arrived on scene, they spotted a driver that had struck a family member who was outside of the vehicle.
The person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police entered into an impaired operation investigation after speaking with the driver and the accused was taken to a local detachment for further testing.
An 81-year-old from Brighton was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) and operation causing bodily harm.
The driver is not being named to protect the identity of the victim.
In addition to a future court date, a further 90-day Administrative Driver Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.
Later that Saturday, at around 10:35 p.m., police were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 east in Port Hope.
Police say a pickup truck was seen travelling at a speed of 146 Km/h in a posted 110 Km/h limit.
The vehicle was stopped with police stating that the driver provided information of another person.
An investigation found that the driver was found to be suspended from driving and a search of the vehicle found 15 grams of suspected cocaine with an approximate street value of $1,350.
The pickup truck was also found to have had a defect.
Thirty-year-old Dalton Chisholm from Uxbridge has been charged with the following:
- Obstruct peace officer
- Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice
- Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine
- Driving while under suspension – two counts
- Operate unsafe vehicle
- Speeding 1- 49 Km/h over posted limit
In addition to a future court date, the vehicle was impounded for seven days
On Sunday, at around 4:35 a.m., OPP received a traffic complaint regarding a passenger vehicle travelling east on Highway 401 in Port Hope.
Officers spotted a vehicle matching the description provided and saw the vehicle being driven erratically and unable to maintain its lane before coming to a stop in the middle of the highway.
Thirty-one-year-old Trevonn Morlese of Toronto was charged with dangerous operation and operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.
A further 90-day Administrative Driver Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.
On Monday, at around 3:45 a.m., officers were helping with lane closures following a collision on Hwy 401 west in the Township of Hamilton.
Police spotted a vehicle entering one of the two closed lanes where numerous Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and tow truck vehicles, all with flashing lights on, were in the area.
The motorist was then seen performing an overtake of another vehicle before returning to the single open lane.
When OPP signalled the vehicle to stop, the driver and the passenger were seen switching spots as they were slowing down.
An investigation found that the initial driver was found to be committing bail violations.
Twenty-four-year-old Louis Viola was arrested and charged with obstruct peace officer, two counts of fail to comply with probation order and fail to slow down and proceed with caution for emergency vehicle or tow truck.
The accused was held on bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
