Margaret Seu was officially sworn in to the vacant seat on Belleville City Council on Tuesday.
Seu fills the seat left vacant by Tyler Allsopp who won the by-election to become Bay of Quinte riding’s MPP last month.
Council voted in its last council meeting to appoint someone who ran in the 2022 Belleville municipal election to fill the seat.
The motion was passed unanimously in a recorded vote.
Seu finished in seventh place in Ward 1 in the 2022 Belleville municipal election, just one spot out of the top six who were voted in.
“I am very pleased to have this opportunity to serve citizens of Belleville. I’m very excited about it,” Seu told Quinte News.
She outlined what she looks to focus on during her term on council.
“As I take on this new role, I’m eager and driven to enhance the education of children, as well as the health and well-being of seniors,” Seu said.
“I’m also hopeful that we can continue to promote strong inclusion and harmony in our community, increasing cultural celebration.”
Seu says she is looking forward to working with council on the pressing issues.
“I hear these stories from everybody and from everywhere, so I’m sure that we have the same challenges here,” Seu tells Quinte News.
“But the council, and under the direction of Mayor Neil Ellis, I think are doing a very good job and I’m very proud of them.”
Her first council meeting will be October 28.
