Volunteers are needed for the the Gleaners Annual Food Drive set to take place on October 6.
The food bank is looking for volunteers to canvas door-to-door for food donations during the food drive.
Director of Operations for Gleaners Food Bank, Susanne Quinlan, says they are looking for about 300 volunteers to contribute.
“We already have 60 students. Albert College brings their own bus, and they canvass the area of where the Greek church is. That area, they do themselves,” Quinlan tells Quinte News.
“We have the Navy League coming out, so that’s another probably 40 cadets. So we still need 200 volunteers.”
Quinlan says volunteers can register a neighbourhood to canvass in.
“If they want to register their neighborhood, because sometimes people like to do their own comfort zone, you need to call so we can register the neighbourhood for your canvassing exclusively,” Quinlan says.
Those interested in volunteering can either call the food bank at 613-962-9043 or email volunteer@gleanersfoodbank.ca.
There are many items that the food bank is looking for to help stock their shelves.
Quinlan listed some of the items.
“So canned soup, canned fruit, apple juice, baby formula, low sugar items, because we have a massive amount of diabetics in our area. Baby food, canned tuna, canned vegetables, school snacks, Kraft Dinner, brown beans, pasta sauce, dry pasta, because it’s gotten to be terribly expensive and of course, peanut butter,” Quinlan stated.
Quinlan also stated there is a need for gluten-free and peanut-free items, in order to help kids bring safe food to their schools.
