Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner says the Bay of Quinte by-election will be a chance for voters to send a strong message to Doug Ford that they’re not happy with the government’s failures to deal with the housing and healthcare crises.
Schreiner says the Green candidate, Lori Borthwick, who has decades of healthcare experience as a respiratory therapist, understands the needs of Ontarians. She’s also been a strong environmental champion for the Bay of Quinte community.
He has already visited the area twice and will be here again before the September 19 by-election.
Schreiner says they’ve heard three main issues while knocking on doors – healthcare, housing and concerns about protecting the local environment.
“And particularly the Belleville watershed and wanting to, you know, say hey let’s build more homes but let’s build those homes in a way that people can afford them and in a way that protects the environment that protects us and the nature that so many people love spending time in.”
He says his party’s approach to solving the housing crisis remains one of the strongest policies in the country.
Schreiner says they will continue to push the government to make the investments that improve people’s quality of life.
“You know what, why does this government want to waste, you know, $10 billion-plus on a highway like Highway 413 when we’ve already got an underutilized highway right next to it, why they’re not using that money to invest in ridings like Bay of Quinte to, you know, address housing affordability, healthcare, education, protecting the places we live in is beyond me and it just shows how the Ford government is taking ridings like Bay of Quinte for granted.”
Schreiner says Borthwick’s approach to politics and approach to dealing with people makes her exactly the type of MPP a community wants.
