Leeds County OPP have charged a person with ten offences in a multi-jurisdictional dangerous driving investigation that expands into Quinte West and Belleville.
On Labour Day, just after 5:30 p.m., Leeds County OPP were called to assist the Belleville Police Service and Quinte West OPP in locating and arresting a dangerous driver.
Police reported the driver had nearly struck firefighters in Belleville and had overtaken vehicles at extremely high rates of speed, including on the shoulders of Highway 401.
The driver reportedly refused to cooperate with police and would not stop the vehicle.
An arrest was eventually made without incident.
Fifty-five-year-old Robert K. Smith of Ottawa has been charged with the following:
- Dangerous Operation
- Resist Peace Officer
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
- Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand – two counts
- Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available
- Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt
- Possess Unmarked Cigarettes
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville later this month.
