Ontario has announced it will be adding capacity to several correctional facilities across the province, including adding more beds at Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee.
In a press release, the government says 18 more beds will be coming to the facility, bringing the total capacity to over 300 beds, as part of an announcement by the government to repurpose and reopen the Regional Intermittent Centre at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre in London and the Toronto Intermittent Centre at Toronto South Detention Centre.
This would bring up to 430 new beds by 2026 that would accommodate minimum- and medium-risk inmates to those facilities.
In Brockville, the government is more than doubling capacity at Brockville Correctional Complex by adding 184 new beds.
The province says it will accommodate the new added capacity by hiring up to 200 additional correctional staff. The government says this could include nurses, correctional officers and support staff.
