Several communities offering free trees this weekend

The annual Community Trees giveaway is Saturday, May 4.

Several local municipalities, in conjunction with Quinte Conservation, are offering a variety of native tree and shrub seedlings free of charge.

Quinte Conservation says native plants play an important role in the region’s natural ecology, and the Community Trees initiative provides residents with a great opportunity to plant in urban and rural properties, helping to increase forest cover across the region for improved watershed and ecosystem health.

Species of native trees and shrubs available include:

Alleghany Serviceberry
Black Cherry
Eastern White Pine
Hackberry
Nannyberry
Ninebark
Red Oak
Red Pine
Silver Maple
Sugar Maple
White Birch
White Cedar
White Spruce

Quantities are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Municipality of Centre Hastings – Centre Hastings Art Centre (24 Seymour St W, Madoc)

Town of Greater Napanee – Strathcona Paper Centre (16 McPherson Drive, Napanee) Municipality of Marmora & Lake – Marmora Fairgrounds (28 Victoria Street – enter off Crawford Drive)

County of Prince Edward – The Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street – entrance off MacStevens Drive)
The Wellington and District Community Centre (111 Belleville Street)
Roblin Lake in Ameliasburgh (13 Coleman Street) City of Quinte West – Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens (8 Couch Cres., Trenton)

Municipality of Tweed – Tweed Arena (297 St. Joseph St.)

It is recommended you bring a bucket or container to transport your seedlings home and plant them as soon as possible.
