Members of Brighton council will be receiving a raise in the near future.
Council recently approved an increase in pay and staff will prepare a by-law making it official
for council’s final approval in March.
A consultant’s review of council remuneration showed Brighton council’s pay was among the lowest in a group
of nine similar municipalities in the region.
Those were Cobourg, Port Hope, Hamilton Township, Loyalist Township, Quinte West, Selwyn, South Stormont, Trent Hills,
and Mississippi Mills.
When the by-law is passed the mayor’s salary will be $39,675 a year, the deputy mayor’s $28,309, and councillors’ annual
pay will go up to $23,503.
Those rates will be increased annually with a cost-of-living adjustment. Per diem rates will also increase.
The increases put Brighton council’s remuneration in the middle of the pack compared with the other nine communities.
Currently the mayor earns $34,008, the deputy mayor $26,690, and councillors $17,828.
