Belleville council will not support a resolution being circulated by the Municipality of Tweed asking that licence plate fees be reinstated by the provincial government.
The resolution says the money generated by drivers paying for licence plate stickers could be used by municipalities to fund much needed infrastructure projects.
Councillor Paul Carr says Tweed’s plan on how to distribute the licence plate revenue won’t be fair to larger municipalities such as Belleville.
“Hesitation is, that I don’t agree with the equal distribution of $2.5 million across 444 municipalities because again I think it needs to be weighted in proportion based on population.”
Before the licence plate fees were cancelled, the revenue generated over $1 billion a year for the province.
