There was a house fire near the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens in Trenton early Tuesday.
Just before 2 o’clock in the morning, Quinte West firefighters responded to an older two-storey brick home at 7 Bay Street.
Fire Chief John Whalen says crews got there very quickly.
“We got lucky because a lot of times those old houses are filled with that insulation and they’ll catch and you’re chasing the fire for hours so they got right at this one and knocked it down quickly.”
One man was taken to Trenton Memorial Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. There was fire damage on the lower floor and smoke and water damage throughout.
Whalen tells Quinte News that the blaze began due to a portable heater with combustibles too close to it.
Damage is estimated between $250,000 and $300,000.
