According to one source, the prison/jail in Napanee could see a major inmate shift.
Quinte News has been told that Quinte Detention Centre (QDC) in Napanee will primarily house female inmates.
The correctional centre housed/houses both remand (awaiting court date) and sentenced inmates.
The source says the centre held prisoners known as “weekenders” as well as those charged with murder, such as Russel Williams and Mohammad Shafia.
We are being told that female inmates from the Central East Correctional Centre (Lindsay Jail), the Brockville Jail, and the Ottawa-Carlton Detention Centre will be rehoused in Napanee at the QDC.
Quinte News reached out to the Ministry of the Solicitor General. Media Spokesperson Andrew Morrison provided the following statement.
“The Quinte Detention Centre (QDC) continues to have both male and female inmates in custody at the facility. When necessary, inmates may be transferred between facilities to accommodate infrastructure-related work. The ministry has no plans at this time to convert QDC to a women-only facility.”
Our source indicates that the time frame for the shift is not known, however, they believe that the centre’s population will 90-95 per cent female.
