Prince Edward County Council is not going forward with plans to construct the Wellington Watermain Trunk and Sanitary Sewer, instead seeking advice from the municipal solicitor.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, councillors were set to award a tender to Clearway Construction Inc. to begin work on the water line. Once built the new infrastructure would connect to the new water tower, and would service new home development in the Wellington and Wellington on the Lake areas while increasing water pressure for existing homes.
The bid by Clearway Construction Inc. was to complete the trunk line for $16,104,835 which was the lowest bid received.
During the public comment section of the council meeting, more than 10 individual residents spoke out with concerns about the project with varying concerns. A common concern was that developers who owned land in the area wouldn’t build new homes as they had been sitting on the land without building for a long time already, and that existing water customers would be left to bear the cost of the new infrastructure.
Councillors decided to hold the matter for additional review, referring the report to the municipal solicitor to seek options to ensure the developer does build if the water line goes in, with the project to come back before the council on December 19.
The bid for the project by Clearway Construction Inc. will remain valid into January of 2024.
