The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board will consider investigating what could eventually lead to major legal action against social media companies at its meeting Monday.
At an October directors meeting of the Ontario Public School Board Association, law firm Neinstein LLP outlined a process that could lead to what’s known as a Social Media Mass Tort against Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Snap Inc., and TikTok.
A mass tort is similar to a class action lawsuit.
The foundation of any legal action would be that social media sites are designed to be addictive to young people leading to various learning disabilities.
Monday the Hastings Prince Edward School Board will decide whether to contact Neinstein LLP regarding exact details on what would be involved in joining a mass tort.
