Signage for the new YMCA Centre for Life was unveiled in a ceremony on Friday.
The ceremony was held in front of members of the YMCA as well as community and government members and leaders.
Construction of the new facility will be at the site of the old Belleville Fairgrounds on Bridge Street West in Belleville.
Once construction is complete, the facility will have two pools (lap and therapy), a whirlpool, a gymnasium, conditioning centre, universal change room, aerobics/exercise studios, multi-purpose/community meeting rooms, lounge and social areas, Kids Kare and a children’s treehouse.
It’s promised to be a modern facility that is designed to be inclusive and accessible.
The total projected budget for the project is $27,494,00. Of that total, 82 per cent or $22,492,620, will go towards construction costs.
The project will be receiving funding from three levels of government. The federal government will be providing $8,997,000, the Province of Ontario will be providing $7,497,000, and $1,000,000 in land and development fees will come from the city of Belleville.
YMCA of Central East Ontario is also receiving $1,000,000 from its partners bringing the total number of funding committed to the project so far at $18,494,000.
A campaign goal of $9,000,000 has been set by the YMCA of Central East Ontario.
According to YMCA of Central East Ontario’s project timeline, construction on the new facility will begin in the winter of 2024 with “substantial completion” expected for the fall of 2025.
