Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams is joining the growing number of voices calling for a detox centre to be built in Belleville, after meeting with Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis and Belleville Police Chief Mike Callaghan.
The call for a detox centre was first raised by Police Chief Callaghan, at a town hall meeting in September at the Belleville Police station.
Williams says he supports Chief Callaghan’s calls for a detox centre in the city, to help address a growing drug addiction problem.
“Our tax dollars are being depleted dealing with the addiction epidemic in our community,” said Williams. “To tackle the ever-growing drug problem in Bay of Quinte, a Detox Treatment Facility is needed. It will ensure our already depleted tax dollar will be stretched to get the best outcome.”
Williams also said that the number of overdose calls in the Bay of Quinte region indicates a crisis.
Earlier this month there were over 90 overdose calls in one week. There are currently 642 people locally on the waiting list for addictions and mental health services.
