The federal government announced today an allocation of federal funding for freshwater projects focused on the Great Lakes including in the Bay of Quinte.
The announcement was made at West Zwick’s Park in Belleville Thursday morning by Canada’s Environment Minister, Steven Guilbeault.
Guilbeault announced $2.7 million would be going to freshwater projects surrounding the Great Lakes that would include the Bay of Quinte.
The money will be invested over three years in 24 different projects.
For the Bay of Quinte, this includes the Lower Trent Conservation Authority receiving $276,000 in a project regarding reducing soil erosion and phosphorus loading.
The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte will receive $75,656 to support the planning and implementation of a community fish consumption survey.
It was also announced that the Bay of Quinte is one of the 12 remaining Canadian Areas of Concern that Canada is focused on in regards to completing action to restore water quality and ecosystem health by 2030.
The allocation is part of a bigger announcement that came back in March from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing $420 million over 10 years to restore and protect the Great Lakes.
