The Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte is calling on the federal government to better deal with repeat offenders.
Ryan Williams says he recently had a ride-along with Belleville police and saw what they deal with on a daily basis.
He says one of the terms he heard several times was “catch and release.”
The MP says officers are dealing with repeat offenders who are being allowed to offend again.
“What we’re trying to do is give more teeth to the courts and to judges, that if there’s a repeat offence, particularly violent crime and drug crime, that those criminals cannot find bail very easily.”
He says they want to see jail and not bail for these offenders.
“Certainly violent crime, any assaults, drug trafficking. Anyone who’s dealing fentanyl or any of these dangerous drugs that are ending up on our streets in Belleville and surrounding area.”
Williams says it is important that during bail, repeat offenders are not allowed back out to hurt Canadians.
