The prime minister is poised to shuffle his cabinet as Justin Trudeau readies the team that will likely lead the Liberals into the next election.
A swearing-in ceremony will take place at Rideau Hall this morning.
Jeni Armstrong, a political instructor at Carleton University, says the shakeup will likely focus on critical issues including housing and the rising cost of living.
She says Trudeau will be looking for good communicators who can resonate with Canadians on those issues.
Meanwhile the MP for Bay of Quinte riding says today’s major cabinet shuffle by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a “house cleaning” and too little too late.
Conservative Ryan Williams says shuffle or no shuffle the damage has already been done, citing high grocery prices, a housing crisis, delays at airports, and increasing mental health/addictions.
Williams says it’s time for an election.
“The real question is will there be one called. It seems with this cabinet shuffle that might be coming sooner than later. I would think that
we will see an election in the next year.”
Also Conservative Williams says he’s disappointed to hear that Anita Anand will be moved out of her role as Minister of National Defence into an economic portfolio.
“I would think with the Ukrainian war still ongoing and our continued role in NORAD and NATO the Prime Minister would have kept the Minister on.
I think that shows carelessness to change in that department particularly now and for CFB Trenton.”
CBC and other national media say seven ministers will be leaving cabinet while four others will not be seeking re-election.
