The 50th anniversary of the Brighton Tornado is Friday.
To commemorate the day, Brighton Fire & Rescue will be sounding the original siren, formerly located at the Fire Hall that was destroyed during the tornado which is now located at Station #1 at 20 Elizabeth Street.
Early in the evening of July 13, 1973, the tornado touched down at 100 Main Street in downtown Brighton and dissipated 32 seconds later at the eastern edge of Memorial Park.
It took out a reported 100 mature trees, damaged many homes and destroyed the Town Hall which housed the Fire Hall.
Miraculously, no one was killed or seriously hurt.
The siren will be sounded at approximately noon.
A day-long commemoration event was held at King Edward Park last weekend.
The municipality advises residents that the sounding of this siren is for commemorative purposes only and there is no real emergency unless otherwise communicated by Brighton Fire & Rescue.
