A protest was held outside Belleville City Hall on Tuesday rallying against the 15 -minute city urban planning concept as well as a general protest against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The 15-minute city concept proposes to have services like work, education, health, shopping and leisure be accessible within 15 minutes of walking or cycling distance from home.
The concept has been pitched in different cities like Ottawa, Ontario and Paris, France.
There has been backlash by some conservative commentators saying it’s an attempt to curtail individual freedoms. Some conspiracy theorists have also linked the concept to the “Great Reset” conspiracy theory.
Urban experts have previously stated that the concept will not control the population.
The group, called Stand4Thee, says it is travelling across the country to protest the idea to local governments as well as protest what they called “treasonous actions” taken by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
They cite the invocation of the Emergencies Act as well as China’s alleged interference in Canada’s elections.
The Public Order Emergency Commission previously found that Trudeau had met the threshold to invoke the Emergencies Act on the Freedom Convoy but the invocation could have been avoided due to circumstances around policing as well as “failing to rise above politics” among all levels of government.
The Globe and Mail newspaper has been reporting on intelligence documents it has received alleging Chinese interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.
Trudeau had recently asked for a probe into a CSIS report that China was targeting MPs.
Some cars and trucks carrying Canadian flags were seen and heard honking in support of the protesters as they drove by.
About 50 people took part in the protest in Belleville which lasted throughout Tuesday.
