Prince Edward County has won an award at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference.
In Ottawa Tuesday morning, the County received the Peter J. Marshall Innovation Award for its efforts to support new housing development.
With a small tax base, the County needed to find a way to fund infrastructure needed to support the unprecedented growth the municipality’s been seeing.
Their solution was to negotiate upfront financing agreements with developers to pre-pay the development charges at the draft subdivision approval stage, ensuring that “growth pays for growth.”
In accepting the award, Mayor Steve Ferguson said, “Municipal staff thought outside the box to come up with this approach that really could be a model for other rural communities.”
The AMO Conference runs through Wednesday.
