Camp Molly is coming to the Quinte region this summer.
Belleville Fire and Emergency Services Chief Monique Belair says the program is open to young women aged 15 to 18 to learn what it’s like to have a career in fire services.
Belair launched the program in the Halton region several years ago when she learned many people didn’t think women could become fire fighters.
“You know, I know back in 1986 when I started, there were obviously stumbling blocks. But to fast forward to just three years ago, that these young students are still believing that this is not a viable option for them. So that’s what instigated me to really want to promote Camp Molly.”
Belair says the program, which they’re running in partnership with Quinte West, will show career options beyond just fire suppression.
“We go through options like fire investigation, so chemistry and physics and forensics or perhaps you like developing programs, and public speaking and engaging with the public so being a fire public educator is an option.”
There are 30 spots available for the free program which will run from July 14-17.
Information on how to apply will be up on the City of Belleville website soon.
The camp is named after Molly Williams, a former slave in New York City who was reported to be the first female firefighter in 1815.
