Hastings County is facing a “human resources crisis” according to a report to county council.
CAO Jim Pine told council on Thursday, “There is a human resources crisis now across the municipal sector generally but it’s certainly affecting the county.”
Pine says the county has to “find ways to attract more employees.”
“Locally in terms of the attracting the talent, we’ve got to find ways to do that in order that we can be prepared for what’s coming in the future.”
Pine also pointed to an asset management report that shows investments he said the county has to make in current facilities.
“The looming investments that we’re going to have to make as a county in our current facilities to keep them whole. Whether it’s in housing or it’s in Long Term Care or paramedic services, wherever it is.”
Pine says he will introduce a proposal in February to modernize the county organization.
“It’s going to be a big effort but I believe it really needs to happen. We can look at individual departments in kind of a patchwork way but I don’t think that gives us the great opportunities. I’d like to look at a more comprehensive approach going forward this year so that you can put something in place for the county, for the long term.
“It’s been on my mind for a while. I thought I’d raise it here. I know you’d expect me to bring back more details at a future meeting.”
“It’s been on my mind for a while. I thought I’d raise it here. I know you’d expect me to bring back more details at a future meeting.”
He pointed out this hadn’t been done in ten years.
