Brighton council is about to start planning ways to commemorate a major event in the history of the community.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says a task force will soon be struck, to plan events for the 50th anniversary of a serious tornado that struck the Village of Brighton on July 13, 1973.
The tornado destroyed the Town Hall which is now the the site of Brighton’s Memorial Park.
“There was a lot of debris, a lot of devastation. The community came together. Farmers brought their tractors down and cleared away the main street. My understanding is that primarily damage was through the downtown.”
Luckily, no one was injured.
The 50th anniversary of a tornado striking Brighton will be celebrated in the summer of 2023.
