The Trenton Golden Hawks met the Haliburton County Huskies, formerly the Whitby Fury, for the first time Friday night, eventually losing 2-1.
Trenton was back at the Dunc for the first of many home games leading into the Christmas break after spending much of the beginning of the season on the road.
The Golden Hawks opened the scoring in the first period when defenceman Brannon Butler netted a power play goal from the left side of the net after a scramble for a loose puck.
Matthew Cato and Julien Jacob drew assists on the goal to put Trenton up 1-0.
The rest of the period was spent in the lead for Trenton though neither team was able to find the back of the net again and the G-Hawks took the lead into the intermission.
Near the end of the first Trenton forward Jake LaVille took a tripping penalty which meant the Huskies started the second with 30 seconds remaining on the power play.
Trenton would successfully kill off the penalty but just one minute later Huskies forward Sam Solarino put a backhand shot past Trenton goalie Ethan Taylor after scooping up a loose puck at the side of the net to knot the game at one.
Before the period expired Haliburton County got one more crack at the power play when Stephen McDonald was sent to the box for holding but the Golden Hawks killed that off as well.
The action was back and forth in the third period but six-and-a-half minutes into the frame Haliburton County’s Christian Stevens scored to take the lead for the Huskies.
Trenton poured on the shots as they tried to mount the comeback, pulling Taylor with just minutes left to play, but could not score with the extra man and eventually lost the game 2-1.
Butler scored the lone goal for Trenton and Taylor made 26 saves on 28 shots.
Trenton fired 42 shots on Haliburton County goalie Christian Cicigoi who was named first star of the night.
The Golden Hawks now turn their attention to the Caledon Admirals who visit the Dunc on Sunday.
The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
